ADVENTURE AND WORKSHOP
Come spend three days exploring the West Coast of Vancouver Island. This Photography workshop focuses on shooting the unbelievable surroundings of the Island. You will travel through the Strathcona area as well as Discovery Passage, Desolation Sound and some of the oldest Glaciers in the area. Whether you are an amateur or professional photographer, there will be plenty to learn and see. The instructors will be on every step of the trip to give guidance on all aspects of shooting. The three nights of accommodation will be pre-booked before you arrive and include all food and transfers throughout the trip. The first night will be at a local Campbell River hotel, then the last two nights will be on the beautiful and private Steep Island. You will not want to miss this exclusive tour and the opportunity to capture places unseen by many.
After arriving in Campbell River and settling into your accommodation at the Comfort Inn; we will meet up at Island Joy Rides to enjoy fire cooked pizza and drinks along the river. While meeting the other guests the guides will go over what is planned for the next 3 days, then it's off to get a good nights sleep before the adventure begins.
The morning will begin with a pickup from your accommodation by the 4x4 Van. We will depart Campbell River heading to the first destination, Strathcona Park. Strathcona Provincial Park is the oldest provincial park in BC and offers unlimited opportunities for nature appreciation and wildlife viewing, while exploring mountain peaks, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls.
After the short (1 hour) drive south we will grab the cameras and head out on one of the numerous hiking trails in the park. Surrounded by temperate rainforest, there will be many opportunities to capture the surroundings and practice shooting.
The morning will end with lunch on the beach of Buttle Lake, a long narrow turquoise lake, bordered on both sides by towering majestic cliffs. Following lunch the boards will be waiting for us to paddle off and explore more of what the park has to offer.
When it’s time to pack up, it’s back in the Van to Campbell River, where there will be a boat waiting for our arrival to transfer us across discovery passage to the beautiful Steep Island Resort. There will be time to check-in and unwind before getting ready for the best seafood feast around! After dinner, it’s time to go over the days shots then for those who still have some energy, a hike around the 18 acre island, sunset paddle into Gowland Harbour or a soak in the hot tub before a well-deserved night of sleep.
The 5am departure will be worth getting up for when the Helicopter picks us up at the resort for a stunning sunrise flight of the Coast Mountain Range. We will land for a photo session and gourmet breakfast (the pilot is Swiss so it will likely be a fonduuuuuu!) on the mountain top, allowing you to take in the view at the best vantage point.
Then back into the chopper for a direct flight to some of the oldest glaciers in British Colombia for a paddle through the amazing glacial lakes. After the Paddle it’s one more epic helicopter flight back down to Discovery Passage where our boat will be waiting to set off for an afternoon of West Coast tidal exploring. Paddle boards and kayaks will be on the boat for use to explore, as we roam from inlet to inlet and island to island. When it’s time for dinner, the boat will take us back to Steep Island for another amazing dinner.
The final day will begin with another great helicopter flight, this time heading up a remote inlet to a grizzly bear watching station. We will be dropped off to spend the morning watching the bears chase massive salmon up the pristine river system. The spawning salmon are the keystone species that created the diverse and amazing coast we see today.
After a few hours, the boat will pick us up and it will be Whale watching time! We will weave back through the amazing fjords and island passages towards Campbell River and will be sure to spot some of the regions Orca, Humpbacks, and Pacific White sided Dolphins.
A quick stop to pack up and say good bye to the staff at Steep, the trip will end with a beach fire in Campbell River and one last chance to share and discuss some photos of this unique trip of a life time.
With his knowledge of the area, Bastian will bring you to some of the least visited places in the coastal mountain ranges such as glaciers, remote islands, secluded mountain peaks and glacier lanes. Only a handful of people will ever get to see those places.
Marc is an adventure and outdoor photographer and usually works for tourism boards and adventure tour providers. You can see his photos at airports, in outdoor magazines and on renowned exhibitions such as the Sony World Photography awards. He will teach you how to frame the shots and wake the emotions of the viewers as if they were on location with you.
Whether on Land or Sea, James has the skills and knowledge to guide you through the wilderness of British Columbia. He will be taking care of your safety and well being along with nourishment throughout the trip.
Tyler is already a local legend as his videos about the island always reach trending status on the web and are being used by local tour providers and tourism boards for promoting the island.
